CORNET AND THE LIKE.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL L. 1V. NELSON, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oornets and the like, of which. the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formino a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The present invention pertains to cornets, trumpets, trcmbones and instruments of a similar character played from a mouthpiece, and it more especially relates to the voicing of these instruments for any pitch.
rThe object of my invention is to provide a mechanical means or device by which the voicing', intonation, power and vocal or tone quality may be changed to suit the ear ot the performer.
My invention can best be seen and understood by reference to the drawings in which it is shown applied to a cornet, and in which Figure 1 shows the instrument in side elevation.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail in side elevation of that portion of the instrument to which the invention essentially pertains.

Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line M of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of an element of construction to which special reference will hereinafter be made.
In the drawings 1 represents the mouthpiece of the instrument having a stem 2. From this there eX- tends a leading tube 3 having in it a pitch slide L1 and tuning slide 5. The pipe connects with the third of a series of valve casings 6, 7 and S, respectively. These valve casings connect with one another in the usual manner and contain the usual parts (not shown). Connecting with the first valve casing is a bell tube 9 which merges at its outer end into a bell 10. The tubes 3 and 9 are formed preferably to provide a bore of gradually increasing diameter. The valve casings 6, 7 and S are provided with the usual bends 11, 12 and 13, respectively.
The fore part of the tube 3 leading immediately from the mouthpiece comprises a short tube section 15 into which the stem of Specification of Letters Patent.

the mouthpiece is adapted to lit in the usual manner. Beyond the tube section 15 the fore part of the tube 3 comprises a series of relatively short tubular sections 16, 1'?, 18 and 19, respectively, of 0radually increasing diameter and connecting telescopically with one another. @f these tubular sections the section 16 fits to slide adjustably at one end within the tube section 15 and at its other end within the tubular section 17. The section 17 in turn tits to slide adj ustably within the section 1S; section 18 within section 1*.) and section 19 within the body 20 of the tube 3.
Thus disposed and arranged the separate tubular sections provide means whereby upon the sliding adjustment of the sections the air column inclosed by them may be lengthened or shortened or its form or taper changed as may be desired.
1 have provided means whereby all or any of the separate tubular sections may be precisely adjusted and afterward maintained in suoli adjustment. Extending from that portion of the tube 3 containing the adjustable sections is a threaded rod 21. At one end this rod is secured to a stud 22 fixed to the top side of the tube section 15. The opposite end of the rod extends through a stud 23 secured to the main body 2O of the tube 3 beyond the adjustable sections. Arranged upon the rod on either side of the .stud 23 are binding nuts 2/1. Mounted also to turn upon the threaded body of the rod are a series of milled wheels 25. |These wheels correspond in number with the separate tubular sections, to be adjusted and turned loosely within sockets 27 formed within studs 28 secured to the sections to be adjusted.
`With the parts thus arranged the sectional fore part of the tube 3 forward of the mouthpiece may be lengthened or shortened and retained in such adjusted position through the adjustment of the binding nuts 2a in relation to the stud 23, while all or any of the individual sections may be adj usted relatively to one another and retained in such adjustment by turning the milled wheels 25 in one direction or the other upon the threaded rod 21.
1n the embodiment of my invention shown, the primary section 16 forms practically what may be termed a changeable throat piece; changeable in the sense that it may be removed and another piece having a different type or form of bore inserted in its place.
According to the construction shown in Fig. 2 the tubular section 16 or throat piece is .provided with a straight bore. In Fig. 5, however, a throat piece is shovvn having a bore of a different type and as representing one of a variety of forms of throat pieces that may be employed. The construction above described is one permitting of the employment of these different types of throat pieces and moreover is especially adaptable in such connection by reason of the fact that the air column in continuation of the column through the throat piece may be made, through adjustment of the separate sections, to form any desired relation of length and taper to that in the throat piece.
Having thus fully described my invention, l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States z- 1. In a cornet and the like, the combination With the mouthpiece of a tubular eX- tension therefrom having therein a series of tube sections of increasing diameter telescopically connected by Which the length and form of the air column inclosed by said sections may be varied, and means for maintaining said sections in adjusted position.
2. In a cornet and the like, the combina.
tion with the mouthpiece of a tubular eX- eter adjustable relatively to one another by which the length and form of the air column inclosed by said sections may be varied, and means for effecting a precise adjustment of said sections and for retaining them in their adjusted positions.
3. In a cornet and the like, the combination of a mouthpiece, a throat piece and pipe leading therefrom, said pipe comprising a series of connected tube sections of gradually increasing diameter adjustable With relation to one another by which the length and'form of the air column inclosed by said sections may be varied.
4. In a cornet and the like, the combination of a mouthpiece, a throat piece having a tapered bore and a pipe leading from said throat piece, said pipe comprising a series of connected tube sections of gradually increasing diameter adjustable With relation to one another by which the length and taper presented by the interior of said sections may be adjusted.
